The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position on the subject of "Reliable in-service assessment in aggressive environments' in collaboration with the Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Center.
The PhD project has a strong emphasis on solid mechanics, mainly plasticity theory, fracture mechanics, numerical modelling and experimental testing.
Expected project start is 1 May 2019.
Responsibilities and tasks This 3-year PhD project is concerned with modeling fatigue life of metallic components in aggressive environments, where hydrogen embrittlement and stress corrosion cracking significantly accelerate fatigue crack growth. Focus is on off-shore applications such as pipelines, jack-ups, tubular joints and threaded fasteners, where environmental assisted failures are particularly severe in applications involving high strength steels. Focus will be on integrating recent scientific achievements in industrial practice, with the ultimate goal of progressively replacing expensive experimental testing with numerical analysis from reliable models.
Preparation of scientific papers and participation in international conferences will be part of the PhD study, as well as following a number of courses and assisting in teaching activities of the department.
The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong background within:
- Mechanics of Materials
- Plasticity theory
- Fracture Mechanics
- Phase field modeling
- Programming of the Finite Element Method
- Experimental testing
Qualifications Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
