The National Food Institute (DTU Food) invites applications for a PhD position affiliated to the Research Group for Risk Benefit in the Division of Diet, Disease Prevention and Toxicology - a dynamic, sociable and highly ambitious research environment.

The position is part of the RAKIP (Risk Assessment Modelling and Knowledge Integration Platform)Initiative, a collaboration between DTU Food, the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR, Germany) and the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES, France). The RAKIP Initiative aims to support the efficient information exchange between models and software tools in the food safety risk assessment domain.

As part of the RAKIP Initiative, the PhD candidate will be affiliated to the research project 'Integration of exposure assessment for microbial and chemical hazards in foods'.
In this project, we aim to develop a harmonised methodology for exposure assessment for application in microbiological risk assessment, chemical risk assessment and risk-benefit assessment of foods. Case studies will be performed to test the methodology and the feasibility of the methods.

You will work in close collaboration with other researchers in and outside the group, among others by research stays at the collaborating institutes.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your tasks in the PhD project will be to:

• Analyse and compare how consumer food handling practices and habits impact exposure to microbial and chemical hazards
• Explore innovative statistical and modeling methods to better exploit the information of food consumption databases and consumer phase models for risk assessment
• Apply these methods on actual cases of quantitative risk assessment and/or risk-benefit assessment
• Share models and results with the whole scientific community involved in food safety

In close consultation with your supervisors, you organise your own work and bring up your own research ideas.

You will contribute to the establishment and promotion of the RAKIP platform.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

• You have a background in food safety and/or microbiology and/or toxicology and/or bioinformatics.
• You are strong in mathematical modelling and data analysis, and have good programming skills, preferably in R.
• You have good skills in written and spoken English,
• You are higly interested in international collaboration, and have excellent communication skills.
• You are ambitious and have a high motivation for research excellence

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

Your main workplace will be DTU Lyngby Campus. You will have research stays of several months at BfR in Berlin and at ANSES in Paris.

Anticipated starting date: 1 October 2019.
