PhD Scholarship in Short Pulse Upconversion Imaging and Spectroscopy - midTECH

The Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position as a part of the ITN project, “midTECH” related to short pulse upconversion imaging and detection. See also http://www.midtech-itn.eu. The project aims to evaluate and compare different types of short pulse light sources for their suitability in mid-infrared (MIR) imaging and detection of (ultra-) fast processes. The right candidate will have his/her permanent work place at the Technical University of Denmark, Risø Campus but will need to collaborate with several external academic partners. Project description In this project upconversion novel methods will be explored for the detection of (mid-IR) femto- picosecond pulses. Different approaches will be sought depending on the application. One approach is the establishment of a synchronized upconversion set-up for recording of ultra-fast mid-IR events. Using a tuneable short pulse (ps / fs) mid-IR light source for excitation / probing of the sample and synchronizing with the residual pump light will allow the demonstration of ultra-fast upconversion imaging in the fs / ps regime as an enabling mid-IR technology. An alternative approach is to use cw mixing in order to circumvent the problems relating to synchronization issues. The candidate will compare different methods. Furthermore, a theoretical study of the upconversion process of short pulses is needed in order to optimise performance. Key activities 1.Literature study of (ultra-) fast nonlinear optics. 2.Theoretical investigation of the upconversion imaging process in the ns, ps and fs range. 3.Experimental set-up using synchronously pulsed upconversion in the mi-IR wavelength range (2-12 µm). 4.Characterization of relevant imaging and detection parameters such as quantum efficiency, spectral and spatial resolution and noise. 5.Implementation in an application. During the project the candidate is also expected to publish and present in English a number of papers and to have a stay abroad at a relevant university or company. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. Assessment The assessment of the applicants will be made by Group leader, Christian Pedersen. Salary and appointment terms Salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students working under the midTECH contract. The period of employment is 3 years. Qualifications You must have an academic background on the level of M.Sc.Eng. with a good understanding of solid state light sources, nonlinear optics and physics. The project will contain both experimental and theoretical work. Knowledge of lab-view and electronics is also preferable.
