PhD scholarship in Simulation modeling of LA-MRSA dispersal and control between swine herds

Section for Epidemiology at the national veterinary institute is seeking a candidate to fill a PhD position studying the modeling of LA-MRSA (Livestock Associated-Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) spread and control between Danish swine herds. This PhD position is part of a larger project, carried out by the National Veterinary Institute (DTU-Vet) and the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), aiming at generating knowledge that will be used to study the spread and control of LA-MRSA between swine herds in Denmark. Therefore, the candidate will have to work closely with another PhD student and a post-doc that will be employed in the section as well as other researchers from both institutes. Responsibilities and tasks 1) Develop a modelling framework to study the dispersal of LA-MRSA between Danish swine herds; 2) Integrate a within-herd spread module within the model, based on work carried out by another PhD student studying the spread of LA-MRSA within swine herds. 3) Use the model to identify important knowledge gaps in transmission and dispersal of LA-MRSA; 4) Model and study the impact of proposed control efforts on the MRSA dispersal between swine herds in Denmark. Qualifications The candidate is expected to have: 1.A master degree or an equivalent training in engineering, mathematics, animal sciences, or physics. 2.Good knowledge and experience of simulation modeling and programming using R, Fortran and/or C. 3.Knowledge of swine production systems. 4.Good collaboration skills. 5.The ability to work organized, structured and independently. 6.Fluency in English Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
