PhD scholarship in simulation modelling of LA-MRSA dispersal and control between and within pigs and humans

Section for Epidemiology at the National Veterinary Institute is seeking a candidate to fill a PhD position studying modelling of LA-MRSA (Livestock Associated-Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) spread and control between and within pigs and humans. This PhD position is part of a larger project, carried out by the National Veterinary Institute (DTU-Vet) and the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), aiming at generating knowledge that will be used to study the spread and control of LA-MRSA between and within pigs and humans. Therefore, the candidate will be working closely with researchers from both institutes. The project runs from 2015-2017, and the PhD candidate must start as soon as possible. Responsibilities and tasks The candidate will have the following tasks: 1.To adapt an existing modelling framework to study the dispersal of LA-MRSA in pigs and humans 2.Use the model to identify important knowledge gaps in transmission and dispersal of LA-MRSA 3.Model and study the impact of proposed control efforts on the MRSA dispersal in pigs, environment and humans Qualifications The candidate is expected to have: 1.A master degree or an equivalent training in engineering, theoretical biology, animal sciences, physics or mathematics. 2.Knowledge of swine production systems. 3.Knowledge in simulation modeling or programming using R will be an advantage. 4.Good collaboration skills. 5.The ability to work organized, structured and independently. 6.Fluency in English Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
