DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. We are now seeking a new PhD student to work on single photon sources within the newly established centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. Start date 1st of October or as soon as possible. Project description The goal of the PhD project is to conduct research on single photon sources for applications in future quantum communication systems. A main focus will be to explore the design, construction and characterization of single photon sources based on Four Wave Mixing (FWM). As a starting point, the PhD will study state of the art experiments on single photon generation , and based thereon develop know-how on photon pair generation based on spontaneous emission in four wave mixing processes. To optimize the FWM process for photon pair generation, the PhD project may investigate use of higher order modes in optical fibers and silicon wave guides. Regarding the latter, in order to integrate the functionality of filtering the pump on-chip, the PhD will also develop ultra-high extinction ratio photonic filters on silicon chips . The PhD project will primarily be experimental. However, theoretical/numerical work will also be part of the PhD study in order to support the experimental activities. The PhD project will have strong synergies with other activities within the SPOC center, for example quantum key distributed systems, Si-based waveguides for optical signal processing and research on higher order mode fibers. It is expected that the PhD student will benefit from collaborations with these activities to enhance the outcome of the PhD project. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval: only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program.
