The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the field of solar energy engineering, starting from March 1, 2019.

Responsibilities and tasks
The main objectives of the proposed project is to test, characterize, and assist in the development of a Fresnel concentrating solar collector in collaboration with the company Heliac. The main component of the project consists of testing the solar collector at the department's experimental facilities at DTU Lyngby Campus. The characterization of the solar collector will be based upon the experimental test results collected and should be carried out using the quasi-dynamic test method. The main objective of the PhD project is to determine impact of the Fresnel lens material on the properties of the solar collector, including efficiency and lifetime. Two types of lenses will be implemented in a full-scale solar field, where the real life performance should be investigated. Furthermore, investigation of the solar resource in Denmark will be carried out using historical measurement collected at the Department of Civil Engineering since 1980's.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in mechanical or civil engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a Master degree in Civil Engineering.

Candidates with a strong background in thermal energy systems and solar energy with a strong interest in experimental work are invited to submit an application. Previous experience with data analysis and measurement systems are beneficial.

Candidates should be highly motivated, eager to seek and share knowledge, able to work independently in a dynamic group environment, and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
