The Department of Mechanical Engineering (MEK) of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an open PhD position in the field of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on modelling heat and mass transfer in the lubricant film in large two-stroke diesel engines. The PhD will be working on the project “Sulfuric Acid Corrosion in Large Marine Diesel Engines (SULCOR)” which is co-funded by Innovation Fund Denmark, MAN Diesel & Turbo SE, DTU Chemical Engineering, and DTU Mechanical Engineering. Responsibilities and tasks The complex heat and mass transfer in the lubricant film on the liner of large two-stroke marine diesel engines is governed by the swirling flow, combustion and the associated radiation in the combustion chamber. The oil film is furthermore exposed to the periodic motion of the piston rings. The goal of the PhD project is to study these phenomena numerically with focus on the mixing of the oil film imposed by the piston rings. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
