PhD scholarship in Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Sensors

DTU Nanotech conducts cross-disciplinary research where micro- and nanotechnology is applied to a wide range of scientific disciplines as well as applications. The Nanoprobes group is a large and highly multi-cultural group, with different research branches focusing on drug delivery, biosensing and environmental monitoring. Responsibilities and tasks The Nanoprobes group at DTU Nanotech wishes to employ a PhD student for 3 years to work in a highly interdisciplinary project focusing on developing a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based sensing techniques for cell studies. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with different national and international research groups, and within the framework of the recently granted Center of Excellence – IDUN (http://www.IDUN.dtu.dk ). Activities involve: (i) fabrication of transparent SERS substrates by employing maskless reactive ion etching of e.g. fused silica – a nanofabrication method which has already been developed at the Nanoprobes group; (ii) constructing a viable, microfluidics-based set-up for analyzing liquid environments using SERS; (iii) evaluate cellular responses to model drugs using SERS. Qualifications The ideal candidate holds a master’s degree (or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to master’s degree) physics, nanotechnology, systems, mechanical or material engineering. A master’s project or previous work experience regarding nanosensors and/or microfabrication will be beneficial. It is important that the successful candidate is familiar with some of the following: - Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy and SERS-based molecular detection techniques. - Nanoplasmonics; fabrication of plasmonic structures for SERS - Raman or other spectroscopy instruments, spectral analysis - Nanofabrication techniques, clean-room experience is a plus - Microfluidics Prior knowledge or experience in studying cells, the chemical environment inside cells or living tissues using spectroscopy tools e.g. Raman or fluorescence-based or other methods is a big plus. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
