PhD scholarship in Synthetic Aperture Radar TOPS-mode Interferometry for Ice Velocity Retrieval

The division of Microwaves and Remote Sensing at DTU Space, Technical University of Denmark, pioneered the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferometry for cryospheric applications in the early 1990's, as part of DTU's Electromagnetic Institute - EMI. We have since then maintained a high level of involvement in these research fields through the development of an operational interferometric SAR processing software under several European Space Agency (ESA) contracts, and the collaboration with foremost national and international research groups within the Danish national PROMICE programme and the ESA Greenland and the Antarctica Ice-Sheet Climate Change Initiative (CCI) projects.

The EU/ESA Sentinel-1 SAR missions are generating an unprecedented data archive for polar applications, making it possible to systematically generate Ice Velocity (IV) maps for both Greenland and Antarctica. However, such data is not currently been exploited to its full potential in terms of retrieval accuracy and spatial resolution, since only amplitude-based data processing techniques are used. This is due to known challenges in carrying out phase-based measurements on non-stationary surfaces such as ice sheets with Sentinel-1's main acquisition mode over land, namely the Terrain Observation with Progressive Scans (TOPS) mode.

Responsibilities and tasks The candidate's main tasks will be:

• To design, develop and validate a phase-based interferometric SAR processing approach for polar ice velocity measurement suitable for Sentinel-1 TOPS data;
• To design, develop and validate procedures to integrate amplitude- and phase-based measurement techniques for ice-sheet wide mapping applications;
• To assess the feasibility and the cost-benefits of including phase-based methods for operational ice velocity measurements;
• To contribute to the international research community in this field, by presenting relevant results at international conferences and workshops and by publishing in high-impact peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in electrical engineering or Earth and space physics and engineering, or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
