PhD scholarship in the use of zeolites for tar de-oxygenation

In the CHEC research group at the Department of Chemical Engineering research is performed on high temperature processes and catalysis. New co-production technologies combining gasification and catalysis can supply a flexible mix of energy products as heat, electricity and renewable liquid fuel. A possible future co-production technology is using a low temperature fluid bed gasifier to produce a tar rich gas. The tars can be de-oxygenated by a suitable catalyst, e.g. a zeolite, to produce a liquid fuel product that can be further upgraded in an oil refinery while the permanent gases can be combusted to produce electricity by use of a gas engine. Furthermore heat from the processes can be utilized for district heating. Responsibilities and tasks The PhD project consists of research and optimization of a tar de-oxygenation system (filter, zeolite reactor, zeolite regenerator and tar collection) and support the mounting of such a de-oxygenation unit on a pilot scale low temperature gasification system. The objectives of the PhD project are: •To optimize a zeolite system using a small scale pyrolysis unit applying different feedstocks and operating conditions, and to improve our understanding on how operation and interaction of a pyrolysis unit, a filter unit and a catalytic unit influence the final deoxygenated liquid product. •To investigate the possibility to regenerate the zeolite catalyst by oxidation and to develop and optimize such a regeneration unit. •To optimize the zeolite de-oxygenation system to work in connection with a low temperature gasifier Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in chemical engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
