The Department of Photonics Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is seeking a PhD candidate working on the synthesis and advanced characterization of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. DTU has a broad range of activities within two-dimensional materials research, with excellent expertise in both theoretical and applied research.

Semiconductor heterostructures are the fundamental platform for many important device applications. Compared to the traditional heterostructures, layered transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures have atomically sharp interfaces, with no interdiffusion of atoms, digitally controlled layered components, and with no lattice matching constraints. One challenge in using semiconductor monolayers in photovoltaic devices is their relatively low light absorption. However, when used as active layers in vdW heterostructures, they can potentially overcome the limitations of individual monolayers. Nonetheless, the optoelectronic properties of (vdW) semiconductor heterostructures beyond bilayers have been poorly studied, mainly due to the technical difficulties associated with the design of such structures.

The successful candidate will be working on a novel approach for the synthesis of vdW heterostructures and superlattices based on Pulsed Laser Deposition, which will allow unlimited combinations of 2D materials in a 3D-structure. You will carry out advanced characterization of these layered systems using ultra-fast spectroscopy or similar. We will rely on you to fabricate novel photovoltaic devices based on 2D materials, as for example van der Waals of WS2/MoSe2, etc. Experiments will be conducted with a suite of capabilities available at DTU and in close collaboration with the Lund University in Sweden. The successful candidate will be part of an exceptional collaborative environment consisting of scientists in nanomaterials, ultrafast optical spectroscopy, theoretical modelling and photovoltaics.

This project is associated to a Sapere Aude- Starting Grant funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark.

Qualifications

• MSc. Degree in Physics, Nanotechnology, Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering or science-related disciplines;
• Good communication skills in English (both written and oral);
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a cross-disciplinary team;

Previous experience in one of the following topics will be an advantage:

• Well-established expertise in 2D materials including but not limited to:
• Synthesis of vdW heterostructures by mechanical exfoliation or similar;
• Nanoscale device fabrication related to 2D vdW materials;
• Experience with ultrafast spectroscopy;
• Experimental background in at least one of the following areas: electron microscopy (TEM or STEM), confocal Raman/PL spectroscopy, AFM, Kelvin probe:
• Experience with solar cells;
• Experience with lasers and optics.

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. Candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs of DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
