DTU Chemical Engineering seeks qualified candidates for a number of vacant PhD positions. Candidates are invited to apply for the specific projects from the list below. PhD positions within the framework of the research platform ‘Minerals and Cement Process Technology – MiCeTech’ funded by InnovationsFonden, FLSmidth A/S, Hempel and DTU: •Improvement of Cement Calciner performance The overall focus of this DTU PhD project is to develop a reliable and validated computational particle fluid dynamics (CPFD) model that is able to simulate simultaneously multiphase flows, chemical reactions, and heat transfer in a cement plant calciner fired by alternative fuels. •Burners for Cement Kilns The aim of this PhD project is to establish a connection between flame video images and physical flame properties, and to develop a simulation model that based on plant geometry and main operation parameters can describe the kiln chamber temperature profile and the cement product quality. •HCl Emission from Cement Plants The goal of this PhD project is to establish knowledge about how HCl emissions are formed and influenced by common process parameters like temperature and moister, and to develop a method for predicting HCl emissions. •Minerals processing – Copper Sulfide Mineral Leaching Two PhD positions are available in this area: 1) Passivation and advanced surface characterization of chalcopyrite particles and 2) Gas mass transfer/consumption of oxygen and mixing dynamic. A significant proportion of the experimental work will be performed at FLS Minerals Research Test Facilities in Salt Lake City, Utah. •Anti-stick coating solutions for the cement and mineral industries The goal of this PhD project is to design coatings for the cement and mineral industries. The coatings should have anti-stick and/or anti-icing properties. Mapping of mechanisms behind sticky and freezing raw materials will also be an important part of the project. Other PhD positions at DTU Chemical Engineering: •Thermal conversion of biomass These PhD projects have focus on equipment design, experiments, and model development for biomass conversion processes with low emissions. Within the framework of SDC (Sino-Danish Center for Education and Research) in cooperation with the Institute of Process Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Nordic Research Cooperation, covering several Nordic Universities. •Low friction non-fouling coatings for high fuel efficiency This Ph.D. project sets out to identify and quantify the key coating parameters important for the fuel efficiency of coatings for slow steaming vessels. Ways to minimize roughness of coatings will be explored and friction experiments performed on both laboratory- and seawater-placed rotary setups. Within the framework of Blue INNOship, InnovationsFonden in collaboration with Hempel A/S, Maersk Maritime Technology and DTU. Applicable for all scholarships Qualifications Candidates should have a master''s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master''s degree in engineering.
