PhD Scholarships in Marine Macroecology and Biodiversity

Centre for Ocean Life (www.OceanLifeCentre.dk) offers a 3-year PhD fellowship in the field of marine macroecology and biodiversity. The fellows will be employed at DTU Aqua (The National Institute for Aquatic Resources, Technical University of Denmark) in Copenhagen, Denmark. http://www.oceanlifecentre.dk/

We expect PhD candidates to investigate large-scale patterns, drivers and the underlying assembly processes that shape the distribution and composition of marine species and traits in space and time.

The candidates will make use of available observational (monitoring) data sets of species occurrences, abundances and traits (i.e., including morphological, physiological and behavioural characteristics) sampled across marine ecosystems and organism groups (including plankton, fish and benthos) and based on statistical tools and modelling develop abstractJV_descriptions and a mechanistic understanding of macroecological patterns of diversity (taxonomic and functional) and community traits and their changes across multiple spatio-temporal scales.

Overall, there in considerable freedom to formulate projects within the general frameworks described above and applicants are encouraged to present their own ideas and/or to contact us to discuss specific project ideas.

Responsibilities and tasks


The PhD candidate will become part of the vibrant, cross-disciplinary, and international research environment at the Centre for Ocean Life that is a Villum Kann Rasmussen Centre of Excellence. The centre is a collaborative effort to develop a fundamental understanding and predictive capability of marine ecosystems through the use of trait-based approaches. We currently have a group of about 20 young scientists associated the Centre (PhD and Postdocs). They are working on various aspects of marine life using diverse approaches (observational, experimental, theoretical) while collaborating through weekly science meetings, annual science retreats, numerous working groups, and collaborative projects. Their backgrounds are as diverse as are those of the PIs of the Centre, from physics and mathematics to biology and chemistry, and we spend considerable effort developing cross-disciplinary communication and projects since we believe that the potential for discovery and progress may be achieved by confronting the different disciplines.

The final PhD project will be developed in collaboration with the relevant principal investigator at the Centre.

Qualifications

We are looking for an ecologist with documented quantitative skills and experience in the handling and statistical analysis of large data sets, or a biostatistician with a keen interest in marine ecology. Candidates should hold a MSc degree (or something equivalent) in biology, bioinformatics, or similar.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
