PhD study in Quantitative analysis of firn permeability and melt water refreezing of the Greenland ice sheet

A PhD Fellowship is available at the Arctic Technology center under department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The fellowship is funded by The Danish Council for Independent Research and is in collaboration with Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI). The successful applicant is expected to start in July/August 2015. The project The announced PhD study will analyze non-linearities in ice sheet melt runoff where changes in permeability are to be quantified using thermodynamic and hydraulic modelling tools. Focus will be to determine the physical setting needed for formation of ice lenses as well as water conduits, which promotes preferential, melt water flow in and hence runoff from the near surface snow and firn of the lower accumulation zone of the Greenland ice sheet. The project will be supervised by Professor Carl Egede Bøggild. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, physics, geophysics, meteorology, earth science or a similar degree. A strong theoretical background in modelling of physical processes and insight to cryospheric processes is preferred. And, a full command of the English language as well as the ability (for non-Danish speakers) to quickly learn Danish is anticipated. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
