The Section for Image Analysis and Computer Graphics at DTU Compute, invites applications for an appointment as postdoc in 3D Image Analysis. The positions is for two years, and aimed at analysing and supporting the analysis of 3D image data. The position is part of the newly formed center “QIM: the center for quantification of imaging data for MAX IV”, which is supported by the Capital Region of Denmark (RegionH) and based on a collaboration between Lund University, University of Copenhagen and DTU. There will also be tasks within the Innovation Fund project “LINX: Linking Industry to Neutrons and X-rays”. The position will be at DTU, but in close collaboration with the other partners and researchers that use imaging for other scientific fields. The position is available from November 1st 2018 or according to mutual agreement.

DTU Compute plays a central role in education at all levels of the engineering programmes at DTU – both in terms of our scientific disciplines and our didactic innovation.

Research in this position will cover 3D image analysis methods in a pipeline from X-ray projection data to structure quantification and simulation. Elements include CT reconstruction, image processing, image segmentation, structural quantification and visualization. This focus on analysis pipelines will allow analysis of large collections of data and make it easy to apply the pipeline to similar analysis problems – also for other researchers.

Responsibilities and tasks 
Image analysis is essential for quantifying structures in 3D imaging from large-scale facilities such as MAX IV, and for this position we seek a person that can analyse 3D data and develop methods for 3D image analysis. This will include: 

• Image analysis of 3D data including segmentation, structure quantification and image statistics.
• Collecting, developing and sharing tools for 3D image analysis.
• Collaborating with researchers that use 3D imaging.
• Collaborations will also include teaching image analysis and instructing scientists with varying background and different levels of knowledge about data science.

Research in 3D imaging typically involves many scientific disciplines, and the responsibility will be to identify relevant automated analysis methods. This will be done in close collaboration with scientists from e.g. materials science, biology, physics, and other disciplines involved in imaging. To be successful, it is important to have good communication skills and a desire to explore different scientific fields and find image analysis solutions to problems in these fields.

3D data is acquired in a close collaboration between beamline scientists and the scientist that has a sample to be investigated. The analysis is however also important for the design of the experiment, and therefore there will be a close collaboration with experimentalists and beamline scientists at MAX IV and at the 3D Imaging Center at DTU.

Qualifications
In order to be qualified for this position, we expect you to have a PhD in image analysis or a related field, as well as experience with practical data analysis using programming, e.g. machine learning or similar. Important qualifications include: 

• ability to program in Matlab, Python, C, or similar,
• capability of implementing and developing 3D image analysis methods based on scientific literature and existing code packages,
• teamworking skills needed for participating in a work of an image analysis team and contribute with your own ideas,
• disposition for thriving in an environment where your work will be used to solve other problems.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position is a full-time position. The employment will be for two years beginning 1 December 2018 or according to mutual agreement.
