Post doc position on Objective Assessment of Food Quality Traits

A postdoctoral position is available within the inSPIRe Food project at the Food Production Engineering (FPE) group at the Division of Industrial Food Research, National Food Institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The postdoctoral fellow occupying the position will perform research in close collaboration with Danish industrial partners with an interest in objective assessment of food quality by imaging and other optical methods both in relation to process control and final quality control. Furthermore, the project will include close collaboration with DTU Compute and Danish Meat Research Institute, Danish Technological Institute. The research and teaching in the FPE group is concerned with the engineering aspects of food production systems and product innovation in the modern western society. The research strength is within analysis, modelling and monitoring of food production systems from single unit operations to operation of complex lines to optimize resource use and quality. A mechanistic understanding of the transformations taking place during processing in relation to raw material and product quality is essential for the work. All modelling involves experimental determination of critical parameters and validation of the models. Responsibililties and tasks The objective of the postdoc project that is offered at DTU Food is to investigate the potential for using optical systems, especially vision systems, in food production, both in relation to process control and final quality control. The project is focused on feature extraction from optical images, i.e. texture, colour, shape and size of the visual appearance as well as chemical and underlying microstructure of an investigated sample, and to build mathematical models for optimal use of the data gained. This work includes unsupervised feature learning, unsupervised texture descriptor identification and semantic image segmentation. Additionally, the project aims at implementing this knowledge into intelligent vision systems able to give an early warning that the production process is out of control or for an objective assessment of random product deficiency. Qualifications: Candidates should have a PhD degree.
