Postdoc for Application of CFD to Scale-Up of Bioreactors

A postdoctoral position is available in scale-up and design of bioreactors for fermentation processes using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). In fermentation, the scale-up of laboratory bioreactors to production scale is a bottleneck on development of processes due to changes in scale and process dynamics. The rules of thumb commonly applied only provide a starting point for the scale-up strategy. In this respect, the use of computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations provides an inexpensive way of obtaining detailed information about fluid flows in tanks of different sizes. Moreover, the simulations are essential for understanding the substrate concentration profiles during fermentation processes.

In this project the multiphasic CFD simulations of bioreactors will be used to collect information on the relation between reactor and impeller design and reactor operation. Structural components of the reactors will be also optimized through topology and shape optimization procedures previously implemented at PROSYS Research Center. In addition, the simulations will also be useful for the development of monitoring strategies.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. The ideal candidate should hold a PhD degree in Chemical Engineering, Biotechnology or similar field. The applicant should have:

• At least 5 years of work experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling tools such as ANSYS CFX®
• Previous experience on CFD simulations of biochemical processes and multiphasic flows, e.g. gas-liquid mass transfer
• Previous experience on usage of CFD for designing and optimizing biochemical reactors, preferably at different scale (micro, lab, pilot, full-scale)
• Previous experience in developing scientific software in MATLAB or a similar language
• Good communication skills in English are required

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 1 year.
