We are seeking a post doctorial associate to become part of the Phenotypic Selection and Stability group at the Novo Nordic Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The group is studying the usage of riboswitch- and transcription factor based metabolite sensors for applications in the field of synthetic biology. The activities range from basic research of understanding the underlying mechanisms and specificities to application of optimized sensors in industrial biotechnology. The group is led by Professor Morten Sommer. Responsibilities and tasks The proposed research will focus on developing a mixed-approach platform for the study and manipulation of cellular biosynthetic precursors and co-factor pools in E. coli, which are the key in the production of polyphenols and free fatty acids. The first are important drug candidates and nutraceuticals, the second are very attractive precursors for compounds used as agrochemicals, surfactants and other applications. Engineering microbial strains for industrial applications is often hindered by the fact that cellular metabolism is complex and small perturbations can substantially impact redox balance, fluxes and (by)-product formation. The elucidation of these metabolic and adaptive responses will strongly help the construction of stable and optimized biosynthetic pathways in host microbes. The candidate will work in a team of multi-disciplinary background, and apply diverse methodologies from genome-wide engineering and analysis to synthetic biology tools to introduce novel functions for biosynthesis and bioconversion. Also, the research will make use of biosensors for screening desired phenotypes. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent. Candidates should have a PhD degree in Bioengineering, Genomics, Microbiology or related research areas. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with microbial strain development through synthetic biology and genome engineering methodologies. Knowledge of Next Gen. Sequencing technology is a plus.
