Postdoc in Design Thinking in Agile Development of Work Systems

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Department of Management invites applicants for a 2-year postdoc position on 'Design Thinking in Agile Development of Work Systems', starting ideally on May 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. This postdoc project will be based in the Innovation Division and headed by Associate Professor Ole Broberg from the Engineering Systems Group.

The Engineering Systems Group is growing fast and is characterised by a vibrant and supportive research environment with engaged staff and strong research collaborations with leading universities and industry worldwide. Our research focuses on understanding and improving the ways in which complex socio-technical engineering systems are designed, managed, and operated throughout their life cycles.

The postdoc candidate will be working at the intersection of design, human behaviour, and human factors and ergonomics.

The objectives of the project are threefold:

• Investigate how to transform Design Thinking into an approach for development of work systems,
• Test and evaluate this approach in intervention studies in a number of companies, and
• Develop methods for applying Design Thinking in this context.

Human well-being at work is a key concern for companies in order to stay competitive and able to attract well-qualified employees. However, it is a challenge how to adapt and develop work systems concurrently with ever faster organisational and technological changes, including digitalisation. In this project we assume that Design Thinking may be a new tool for a flexible and agile development of work systems. The project is aimed at testing this hypothesis in a number of industrial intervention studies. The contribution will focus on new knowledge on how to transform Design Thinking to this specific purpose, and investigate the effects on the development of work systems.

The project is made possible by the collaboration between DTU and NIRAS Joblife. The project will be headed by Associate Professor Ole Broberg, Engineering Systems Group in collaboration with Associate Professor Rikke Seim, Implementation and Performance Management Group.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate's responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

• Transform Design Thinking tools into the field of development of work systems
• Review organisational baselines in participating case companies
• Help design intervention studies in companies
• Follow and analyse the intervention in case companies
• Help design and complete studies of the effects of interventions
• Design guidelines and methods on applying Design Thinking in development of work b systems
• Research dissemination, including conference papers and articles in peer-reviewed international journals

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.

Preferably, candidates should hold a PhD degree within design, design engineering, or human behaviour and organisational change.

Further qualifications include:

• Interest in development of work systems and well-being at work
• Excellent collaboration and communication skills
• Fluent written and oral Danish language is a prerequisite due to close interaction with employees at Danish workplaces

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is two years.
