Postdoc in Machine Learning for Educational Technology

DTU Compute’s Section for Cognitive Systems, invites applications for an appointment as postdoc. The postdoc position is funded by the Innovation Foundation Denmark’s project “ATEL Teaching platform for developing and automatically tracking early stage literacy skills”. The project’s aim is to support early stage writing and to build a platform with automated scoring that over time will help reduce literacy difficulties among children. 

The position is available from December 1, 2018 or according to mutual agreement. The postdoc position is initially available for one year and may be extended on mutual agreement.

The Section for Cognitive Systems is a lively and research oriented group of scientists and support staff with a shared interest in information processing in man and computer, and a particular focus on the signals they exchange – audio, imagery, behavior – and the opportunities these signals offer for modeling and engineering of cognitive systems. 

Our department DTU Compute is an internationally unique academic environment spanning the disciplines mathematics, statistics and computer science. At the same time we are an engineering department covering informatics and communication technologies (ICT) in their broadest sense. Finally, we play a major role in addressing the societal challenges of the digital society where ICT is a part of every industry, service, and human endeavor.

Responsibilities and tasks 
Research, develop and apply deep learning based natural language processing for predicting syntactically correct and semantically relevant Danish sentences based on students’ writing and image metadata. Research, develop and apply Bayesian machine learning models of the dynamics of students’ writing proficiency.

Qualifications 
The right candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in mathematical modelling and computing, computational science and engineering or equivalent academic qualifications. Candidates must document advanced machine learning skills, e.g., through publications in top machine learning conferences. You must have experience in Bayesian machine learning and have a keen interest in deep learning for natural language processing. You must have excellent communication skills (writing and speaking) in English and share our dedication to solve hard problems in educational technology. The project is interdisciplinary and excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills with people with different knowledge and background are essential. Finally, you should be interested in teaching and public dissemination within the partnership and in supervising master and bachelor students.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The postdoc position is full-time and initially available for one year.
