PostDoc in Turbulence: Reconsidering the Richardson-Kolmogorov Paradigm Towards a Robust Description of Turbulence

The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DTU Mekanik) at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) has an ERC Starting Grant (project acronym: UniEqTURB) sponsored opening for a 3-years and 4 months PostDoctoral position in the area of Theoretical, Experimental and Computational turbulence.

Within the scope of the project, the PostDoctoral student will conduct a dynamic analysis of the turbulent round jet using elements from differential geometry and functional analysis. The candidate will also support analysis of extensive measurement data in novel ways to test the validity of the existing theories of turbulence and attempt to synthesize new theory based on the empirical result. Furthermore, the student should be able to conduct Direct Numerical Simulations on round jet flows and combine it with the analysis of the measurements in a synergistic manner. The ERC grant sponsors a total of three PhD students in addition to the PostDoctoral fellow.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate will be responsible for the development of novel analysis of the measured and simulated flows.

The candidate will also be responsible for conducting the Direct Numerical Simulations of the round jet and carry out advanced analysis of the simulations, also in synergy with the measurements. These simulations will be carried out together with expert collaborators from Imperial College/U. Magdeburg.

The candidate will also be given the possibility to develop leadership skills and experience in co-advising PhD- and MSc-students, including experimental work.

The candidate is expected to be able to work independently and take ownership of, and responsibility towards, the project, to be able to carry out the tasks.

Close international collaborations with established partners such as Imperial College London/Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg, École Centrale de Lille and DLR Köln.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a PhD degree in theoretical, computational and experimental turbulence or equivalent.

The candidate should have:

• A solid mathematics background, including functional analysis and differential geometry
• Practical experience with Particle Image Velocimetry measurements, in particular on turbulent jets
• Experience with Direct Numerical Simulations, preferably on turbulent thin free shear flows
• Sufficient knowledge of signal processing and data interpretation to recognize limitations in the measured and simulated data
• A solid theoretical background on turbulent jet (and other thin shear) flows in particular as well as on turbulence in general

The candidate should also enjoy teaching and supervision of project students on different levels. Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect the candidate to be interested in collaboration and to take personal responsibility for the assigned tasks. An openness to new ways of working (e.g. lean and agile working strategies) is a necessity.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years and 4 months.

The PostDoctoral student will become a member of the DTU Turbulence Research Laboratory and therefore part of a group that works together in synergy with different aspects of turbulence. We strive to work according to the philosophy of lean production and agility.
