Postdoc of data mining and analysis to understand one of the big questions in evolutionary biology

The department of Plant and Environmental Sciences seeks an enthusiastic and motivated postdoc, with a background in bioinformatics, for a 2 year post doctoral position aimed at illuminating the origins of sexual reproduction. The position is open from 1 February 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The project will comprise phylogenetic reconstructions using Baysian methods of a number of gene families over quite large evolutionary distances, mainly from different groups of protists. We are seeking a candidate who is truly interested in working in the cross-disciplinary field of cell biology and bioinformatics. The project addresses one of the fundamental questions in evolutionary biology and aims at understanding the drivers and mechanisms behind the origin and early evolution of eukaryotic life.

The ideal candidate:

• Must have a PhD, preferably in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Biosciences with a strong bioinformatics component
• Is ambitious, curiosity-driven and likes interdisciplinary work
• Has experience in a scripting or programming language
• Is familiar with large scale data analysis (e.g. RNA-seq, ChIP-seq)
• Is interested in evolutionary and/or comparative genomics and in addressing fundamental questions in Biology
• Is fluent in English (spoken and written)
• Is able to work and to solve problems independently
• The concepts of gamma distributions and other aspects of how to select a suitable nucleotide substitution model for phylogenetic studies should preferably not be totally foreign territory
• Is preferably experienced with laboratory work on unicellular eukaryotes

Terms of employment
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 426.625 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 72.952). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
