Postdoc on Interactions between Fisheries and Protected, Endangered and Threatened Species

Applications are invited for a position as post-doctoral researcher with emphasis on research and advice in relation to interactions between fisheries and protected, endangered and threatened species (PETS). The researcher will join the research group working with ecosystem effects of fishing and their management. The group is embedded in “Section for Ecosystem based Marine Management” in Charlottenlund. The section has 35 employees and focuses on interdisciplinary research improving our understanding of marine ecosystems and how they are managed. It offers an internationally recognised and highly dynamic scientific environment. Responsibilities and tasks The research tasks will focus on identifying factors and processes important for determining and controlling bycatch of marine PETS, in particular marine mammals, and on development of methods to avoid such bycatch including development and testing of fishing gear that can act as alternatives to existing gears. The position includes collaboration with fishermen, stakeholder organizations, management bodies and Danish and international research institutions. We are looking for an innovative person, preferably a biologist specialised in interactions between PETS and fisheries, with a committed and positive attitude, and the ability to work in a team, as well as independently. The successful applicant will engage in our existing extensive international collaboration with other research institutions as well as fishermen's organisations. Important tasks include the development of new research and management projects, including project applications and publication of results in peer reviewed scientific journals, popular journals and technical reports, as well as provision of advice to the Danish Ministry of the Environment and Food. The candidate is expected to contribute to the development of new methods for documenting the interactions between fisheries and PETS. Qualifications Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent and research experience in interactions between fisheries and protected, endangered and threatened species. Assessment In the assessment of the candidates, particular consideration will be given to: •Experience with planning and conducting field work, in particular on board commercial fishing vessels •Experience with management of research projects •The ability to communicate at all levels in English •Good communication and writing skills in a Scandinavian language •Ability to communicate effectively with the fishing community •Research potential, including experience with publication in scientific journals •Innovative skills and the ability to generate new ideas •Possession of a driver’s license •Ability to work independently and conscientiously as well as in teams We offer We offer an interesting and challenging job in an international environment focusing on applied research as well as education and public-sector consultancy.
