Postdoc Position: Development of Micro-Nano-Bio Systems for Fast Sepsis Diagnosis

The National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Food) conducts cross-disciplinary research on public health in relation to nutrition, food safety, environment and health. Activities include research, risk assessments, advisory to Danish, EU and international authorities and industry of food products throughout the food chain, from farm to table and the impact on human health. The institute monitors national food consumption patterns and food safety, and diagnostic services. The Laboratory of Applied Micro and Nanotechnology (LAMINATE) at DTU Food invite applications for a postdoc fellowship position to develop advanced micro-nano-bio systems for fast sepsis diagnosis. Background The candidate will work for SMARTDIAGNOS an EU newly funded project under Horizon 2020 framework programme. It involves ten partners from five European countries. Sepsis is a big public health issue not only in the EU but also worldwide because of its high incidence, mortality and economic cost. Sepsis diagnosis remains one of the greatest clinical challenges in critical care. The SMARTDIAGNOS aims at advancing sepsis diagnosis by simplifying the current clinical analysis methods and integrating the numerous steps, including sample preparation, DNA amplification and optical detection, into a single plastic cartridge that will be inserted in an instrument. A number of cutting-edge micro-nano-bio and bio-photonic technologies will be developed. The intended diagnostic tool will enable fast and accurate identification of sepsis-related pathogens and their antibiotic resistance profiles, so that effective antimicrobial therapy can be initiated. Responsibilities and tasks The main task of the position is to cover the Nano-biological aspects. The work includes: (1) development of new sample concentration method to capture pathogens directly from blood; (2) development of Nano-Bio based or other amplification technologies for identification of a large-panel of pathogens and the relevant antibiotic resistance profiles; (3) implementation of the develop assays on lab-on-a-chip platform; (4) collaboration with other partners on system integration and evaluation using biological samples. Qualifications The successful applicant for the postdoc position should have a background (PhD degree or equivalent) in Nano-biotechnology or Molecular Biology or related disciplines, with a strong background in Nano-biotech and molecular techniques that include: Bio-nano sensor, Isothermal amplification and other amplification, Immuno-based (applied antigen/antibodies/ aptamer) for sample purification, concentration and rapid detection. Experiences with DNA manipulation, DNA origami, nano-biosensor, microarray, immuno-based, aptamer and lab-on-a-chip systems will be considered as an advantage. The candidate should demonstrate evidence of self-driven and independent prior research productivity, excellent collaboration and communication skills, an interest in working in an interdisciplinary research environment, and a strong motivation to succeed within a competitive research field.
