Postdoc position in Simulations of Disordered Materials for Battery Applications

The Section for Atomic Scale Modelling and Materials at DTU Energy, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), is looking for outstanding candidates for a 2-year postdoc position in simulations of disordered materials for battery applications. The position is part of the ongoing LiRichFCC and Mat4Bat projects and involves close collaboration with leading international partners; both projects are focused on the development of new materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Project abstractJV_description
The successful candidate will strengthen our research activities on method development for accelerated computational discovery of new battery materials, specifically disorder battery materials. These materials, e.g. based on lithium-rich rock salt oxides/oxyfluorides (LiRichFCC materials), can store and reversibly exchange Li by a mechanism which allows unprecedented packing densities and highest volumetric content of Li in a cathode.

The focus will be on developing and implementing machine-learning and data-driven models to predict the local order/disorder in such structures and analyse its impact on the performance of the battery (open circuit voltage, stability, cyclability and transport properties). The primary task will be to develop a cluster expansion code in Python to be integrated in the Atomic Simulation Environment (ASE) package.

Qualifications
The candidate should hold a PhD or equivalent degree in chemistry, physics or materials science. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in at least one of the following topics:

• Development and implementation of cluster expansion method and other machine-learning related algorithms.
• DFT-level modelling of materials for energy storage and conversion.
• Programing in Python language.

Experience with Monte Carlo simulations and/or Simulated Annealing is also desirable, but not mandatory.

Moreover, the successful candidate:

• is innovative and able to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams.
• has good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
• is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
The appointment will be for 2 years.

Work place
The work place will be DTU Energy, Lyngby Campus.

We are currently present on both Risø Campus, close to the town of Roskilde, and Lyngby Campus, north of Copenhagen. In 2019, the entire department will be moving into new facilities at Lyngby Campus.
