Postdoc position on the Development of Immune-based Lateral Flow Assays Intended for a Lab-on-a chip (LOC) Device for Point of Care Testing of Mastitis in Danish Cattle Herds

Centre for Diagnostics DTU is offering a two-year postdoc position commencing 1 April 2019 or soon thereafter.

 The project

The postdoc will work on the project ‘Mastitis Milking Parlour Diagnostics’ granted by the Green Development and Demonstration Programme (GUDP). Mastitis in dairy cows is very common, accounting for up to 70% of the usage of antibiotics in cattle, and leads to great economic loss for the farmers. The postdoc will be part of an established team dedicated to develop a point of care testing device, which can detect the most common pathogens causing clinical mastitis. The multi-partner project employs academics from DTU Compute, DTU Bioengineering, Centre for Diagnostics DTU and has Dianova A/S as the commercializing partner. 

The postdoc will be placed in the Development group at Centre for Diagnostics DTU, a group that is dedicated to developing new effective and rapid diagnostic tools for customers and for the benefit of society.

 
Responsibilities and tasks

The primary responsibility of the postdoc is to develop, validate and implement several antibody-based lateral flow assays as an integral part of a single LOC device. When fully functional, the LOC device will detect several of the most common pathogens causing clinical mastitis along with a bacterial enzyme, which causes antibiotic resistance. Development of the assays will be done in close collaboration with a second postdoc hired to the project by DTU Bioengineering, and will include optimization parameters such as the general design of the paper chip, screening for suitable detection antibodies and the conjugation of antibodies to nanoparticles that give a colorimetric readout. 

The microbiology work includes working independently with experimental microbiology, including design of spiking experiments, quality control of microbiological samples and resistance analysis. Part of this work will also include the culturing of relevant bacteria, to ensure enough test material for the development of assays. The overall task is to provide relevant bacterial cultures to develop and validate the immune-based assays. The final LOC device must apply to a relevant population of mastitis-causing bacteria, and with sufficient specificity. Accordingly, quality control and appropriate selection of bacteria are critical aspects of the work for the postdoc.

 Qualifications

The candidate must hold a PhD degree in biology, human biology, microbiology, veterinary medicine or a closely related discipline. The successful candidate is expected to have solid experience with development and implementation of immune-based assays such as ELISAs.

Moreover, solid experience from a microbiological laboratory is required and experience with GLP-guidelines and quality assurance is a strong advantage. 

Experience with the field of human or veterinary diagnostics is also a strong advantage.

 Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. 

The main workplace will be at the DTU campus in Lyngby, 10 km north of Copenhagen, Denmark. 

The employment as a postdoc is a full-time and fixed-term position for two years.

Centre for Diagnostics DTU is a Centre which recently separated out from the DTU Veterinary Institute. The purpose of the Centre is to assemble diagnostic competencies and act as an entrance to diagnostics as a subject area - both across DTU and in relation to a number of external stakeholders.
