Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals for a postdoc position in radiopharmaceutical chemistry at the Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Nutech (Risø Campus).

Project abstractJV_description
As a postdoctoral scientist, you will enter the research program at the Hevesy Laboratory, where you will join the effort to develop new groundbreaking drug delivery systems for diagnosing and treating disease with radionuclides. At the Hevesy Laboratory, tracer and targeting systems are designed, radiolabeled and synthesized from scratch using organic and inorganic chemistry, radiochemistry and nanotechnology. Within this field, your primary project will focus on the design and preparation of highly advanced drug delivery systems for targeting multiresistant bacteria with Auger radiotherapy. Auger-therapy is based on radioactive decays where a high amount of very short range electrons are emitted. 

Therefore, these radionuclides must decay in close proximity to the DNA of target cells in order to be effective. The success of Auger therapy against infection thus requires novel and innovative delivery and targeting strategies, which this project seeks to develop using state-of-the-art nanoparticle and biorthogonal click technology. Prepared systems will be designed at the molecular level and tested in vitro at the Hevesy Laboratory and further investigated in vivo in mouse models. On the long-term, successful systems will be translated to larger animals and eventually human subjects. Further details of the project will be provided at a potential interview. The project is funded by an external grant.

Responsibilities and tasks
Within the primary project, the successful candidate’s main tasks will be to:

• Synthesize small molecules radiolabeled with Auger radionuclides
• Prepare inorganic and/or organic nanoparticles
• Combine radiolabeled compounds and nanoparticles through organic chemistry
• Test anti-bacterial Auger radiotherapy in vitro
• Prepare radiolabeled systems for in vivo studies
• Assess results from in vivo studies
• Write and publish scientific papers

As a postdoctoral scientist you will also be able to participate in the range of other projects that are currently on-going within the group. Eventually you will also contribute to the general strategy of the group and the design of new projects. The project and general work will require some amount of traveling.

Qualifications 
The candidate must have a recent (< 4 years) PhD degree in radiochemistry, organic chemistry, drug delivery or a related field. In addition, the successful candidate must:

1. Have a solid foundation in chemistry, especially organic synthesis
2. Have an excellent command of English, both spoken and written
3. Have a track record of academic publications, including writing/drafting first author papers
4. Be driven, enthusiastic and highly ambitious
5. Have a positive and social mindset
6. Enjoy team-work and frequent communication with colleagues and collaborators

The following criteria are considered advantages but not requirements:

1. Practical experience with nanomedicine
2. Practical/theoretical experience with biorthogonal click chemistry
3. Practical experience with radiochemistry
4. Practical in vitro and theoretical experience with prokaryotes
5. Theoretical knowledge of pharmacology
6. Theoretical knowledge of human physiology

About the Laboratory
The Hevesy Laboratory is a radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical division within the Center for Nuclear Technologies (DTU Nutech), with about 40 employees. The laboratory has a 16.5 MeV cyclotron equipped with a beam line for in-house production of radioisotopes, both for PET scans (18F, 64Cu, 89Zr, 52Mn) and internal radiotherapy. These radioisotopes are put to use in radioactive pharmaceuticals. The laboratory has chemistry and biology research laboratories and clean rooms, which feature state-of-the-art equipment for working with radioisotopes. In addition, our in-house GMP team produces radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy, which are delivered to local hospitals as well as external collaborators. The division also features a radioecology research section. 

At present, the research group in radiopharmaceuticals at the Hevesy laboratory consists of a young and dynamic multidisciplinary team, focusing on the development of new radioactive pharmaceuticals for diagnostics and therapy. Our research is heavily interdisciplinary and multi-site, featuring various collaboration partners both nationally and internationally. Several of these will be involved in this project. All scientific communication in the research group is done in English.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is full-time, with a fixed term of two years. 

The employment period starts on November 1st, 2018 or shortly thereafter. The starting date may be tailored to the right candidate. The primary place of work is The Hevesy Laboratory, DTU Risø Campus in Roskilde.
