The Department of Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position with emphasis on research in Materials Mechanics and Composite Materials. The mission of DTU is to develop and create value using the natural sciences and the technical sciences to benefit society. A part of the mission of Department of Wind Energy is to develop new technologies for wind power and materials research in composite materials for wind turbine rotor blades plays a key role. The development trend in wind energy are towards yet longer wind turbines and off-shore placements and it is a major challenges to ensure that future rotor blades can have a higher reliability despite being made as very large structures and thus inevitable will have manufacturing defects. This put emphasis on the development of the more damage tolerant materials and material interfaces in e.g. adhesive joints and sandwich structures. Responsibility and tasks The professor will work in the Section of Composites, which has strong competences in processing and mechanical characterisation of composite materials as well as modelling of composite materials. The professor will have the role of leading the development of new composite materials with increased damage tolerance well as establishing design concepts for damage tolerant concepts for composite structures. The professor is expected to initiate and lead research projects across the research disciplines of the department and bring research results into application by close collaboration with industry. The professor and the research group collaborate with other sections in the department for the development of the cross-disciplinary research programmes Wind Turbine Technology and Offshore Wind Energy as well as with research groups in the DTU departments DTU Mechanical Engineering and DTU Civil Engineering. The successful candidate is also expected to contribute to education in the field of mechanics of composite materials, as well as supervise master- and PhD students. Qualifications The candidate should possess scientific excellences within the field of mechanics of materials, in particularly within microscale testing for the identification of damage and failure mechanisms in composite materials, and within theoretical, micromechanical and phenomenological modelling of fracture mechanics properties of composite materials. Assessment In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to •scientific production at international level, research potential and ability to lead and develop a research team •the ability to promote and utilize research results •experience with innovation activities •an all-round experience basis, including international experience •the ability to contribute to the development of the internal and external cooperation •track record in attracting funding to the research area •visions within the research area For the specific position consideration will also be given to: •expertise in fracture mechanics and cohesive zone modelling •ability to collaborate with industry •experience in planning and leading research Projects •national and international collaboration •teaching experience •experience in supervision of PhD and Master students Salary and terms of employment The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations.
