Research Assistant / Senior Technician - Microbiology

The Screening Team within Human Health & Microbiome Innovation is looking for a Research Assistant or Senior Technician with a strong background in microbiology. The team assesses the potential of next generation probiotic and live biotherapeutic bacteria. The work is varied, with both evolving needs and fast growth, and often involves early stage research, such as developing new assays for biomarker identification or identifying and characterising new strains.

 

Role and responsibilities

Your primary role and responsibilities: 

• Support Human Health & Microbiome Innovation projects in key or strategic focus areas, including assessing probiotic and live biotherapeutic strains for features relevant to health functionality, safety, and production.
• Your main tasks will include:
  • Strain purification, growth, and culture collection deposit
  • Establish and manage inventories (cell banks, data, etc.)
  • Preparation of samples / strains for sequencing and other analyses
  • Phenotypic characterization of strains, including:
    • Development of new / adaptation of existing assays to screen strains
    • Methodology and literature review
    • Trouble-shooting of assays
    • Optimization of existing methods for anaerobic strains
  • Generation, analysis, documentation and presentation of data.
• Additionally, you will:
  • Participate in relevant team and scientific meetings
  • Take care of day-to-day management of the laboratory to ensure key equipment / resources are maintained and supplies are available
  • Ensure safe working practices are followed in the lab (BSL2, APV, etc.)

 

Qualifications and competences

We expect for you to have the following experience and background: 

• Master of Science in microbiology or related field with at least 3 years’ experience or laboratory technician with a strong background in microbiology with at least 8 years’ experience.
• Must have hands-on lab experience and can grow and maintain fastidious microbes in pure culture. Experience with anaerobic microbes is an advantage.
• Skilled in developing and documenting methods, protocols, and experimental data.
• Current knowledge of relevant safety regulations and their use in laboratory management (e.g., EHS, biosafety, APV, risk assessment, incident reporting, etc.).
• Experience in working in industry, preferably in a GMP, GLP, or another quality-assured environment is an advantage. 
• Excellent spoken and written English is required, Danish an advantage.
• Proficient user of Excel, Word, etc.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, you enjoy working as part of a team and seeing projects through to completion.
• Ability and willingness to drive own projects is expected.
• Detail orientated – good at documenting with an eye for detail.

 

Further information
You will join a team of dedicated colleagues in Screening and will have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with the Process department in Human Health & Microbiome Innovation. You will be based in Hørsholm (near Copenhagen) and will report to the Screening Department Manager.
