Research Scientist: Characterization and Advanced use of Biomass Pellets in Power Plants

A research scientist position is available at CHEC Research Centre at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The fellow occupying the position will work on the characterization and advanced use of biomass pellets in power plants. Thermal gasification, pyrolysis and combined heat and power production from biomass; together with pre-treatment and characterization of solid biofuels are part of the Research Centre’s field of studies. The successful candidate will work on pellet characterization and the efficient operation regarding pellet comminution in coal mills and biomass suspension combustion on large pulverized fuel power plants. Responsibilities and tasks The objective of the studies is to support an efficient and fast conversion of pulverized coal-fired power plant boilers to operation on biomass fuels by investigating key issues that can ensure an efficient and effective milling of biomass pellets in existing power plant coal mills and facilitate high fuel flexibility, boiler availability and electrical efficiency in the appertaining boiler systems. The work includes: •Detailed study of milling properties of different biomass fuel types and characterization of resulting milled particles. •Establishment of correlations between milling measurements performed in the laboratory and milling measurements obtained onsite at the power plant. •Identify new methods to characterize pellets that can predict their grindability in different types of mills. •Identify the causes for very poor combustion of some biomass pellets. •Cooperation with large-scale pellet producers to investigate how improved combustion properties can be achieved by optimizing the pellet production process. The project will run in close collaboration with industrial partners and other research groups and departments at DTU. Such collaboration is foreseen for future projects. It is expected from the research scientist to contribute to teaching activities and perform a limited amount of other assignments. Qualifications Applicants should have the following qualifications: •PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field. •Documented experience and background on biomass pelletization. •Knowledge and experience in biomass fuels characterization methods. •Knowledge and experience in 2D Imaging techniques like Camsizer (Retsch Technology) for particle analysis by digital image processing. •Experience with working with laboratory and bench scale pelletizers. •Experience in setting up models and the use of such models in simulation studies. •Good collaboration skills. •The ability to work organized, structured and independently. •Fluency in written and spoken English.
