The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a Researcher position in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best performance, lowest cost and overall structural integrity of wind turbines as well as advance the design, operation and control of entire wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modelling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability and control. LAC focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines, and implements its research in software tools and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

This researcher position focuses on developing and applying theoretical expertise in wind turbine and plant controls in particular as a crucial element of the overall section and department activities in research, education and innovation.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. Responsibilities and tasks

Your work will mainly be focused within control engineering activities in research and commercial projects in Loads and Control Section at DTU Wind Energy. Specific tasks will include:

• Development of control and state estimation design methods tailored for wind turbines
• Study of control and state estimation strategies for turbines in a wind farm
• Identify the potential control and wind energy projects and assist with the preparation of new proposals and fundraising

In addition, you are also expected to support the activities on the development and maintenance of our in-house turbine controller.

You will participate in a number of national and international research projects within the field of loads and control and contribute to the management and generation of new projects. There are also good opportunities for developing innovative ideas in the direction of commercializing research.

The research aims at creating new valuable knowledge within the wind energy and control area and implementation at this in department activities as well as in the industry in both the short and long term. Much of our activities are performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions.

In addition, the researcher is also expected to contribute to the following tasks:

• Contribute to the ongoing projects in LAC with reporting and administration
• Offer support and assistance in teaching the wind energy courses relating to control and develop the control-related course materials if required
• Supervise our wind energy master students relating the control aspect and define the potential projects for the master students

Qualifications

The section for Loads and Control at DTU Wind Energy is looking for a control engineer with a strong academic background in control theory and its application in wind energy. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in control engineering or relevant engineering disciplines. Post-doctoral experience in control and wind energy is preferable.

Experience with advanced model-based control methods, such as model predictive control, within the areas of the wind energy system is important. The candidate must further have an internationally recognized track record within the areas of wind turbine control and proven ability in modern control strategies - for example:

• Model predictive control
• Feed-forward control
• State estimation/Kalman filtering
• Individual blade-pitch control
• Wind turbine down-regulation control

Experience with aero-elastic codes, such as HAWC2 and FAST, is preferable. Experience with programming languages/control design tools, such as Fortran, MATLAB and Simulink, is an advantage. It is important that you are open-minded, responsible, ready to engage in a team and have good communication skills.

Salary and terms of employment


The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment.
