Researcher in Information Theory and Coding Applied to Optical Communication Systems and Components

DTU Fotonik invites applications for a position as Researcher within The Coding and Visual Communication Group at DTU Fotonik. The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

The Coding & Visual Communication Group conducts research in the areas of coding and information theory for communication technology, including channel coding as shaping and error-correcting coding. The coding and information theoretical techniques are applied to optical communication.

The position will be supported by the DNRF research centre of Excellence, SPOC (Silicon Phtonics for Optical Communcations) and the IFD INCOM project, both lead by DTU Fotonik.

The research field is coding in optical communication and applying information theoretical concepts to optical communication. The focus is analysis, design and optimization of selected components in a system perspective. Simulation and computer calculation of the components and the system play a major role combined with validation by lab experiments. The two will also be combined for analysis of lab experiments and in lab computer calculations.

Responsibilities and tasks

The candidate shall conduct research within applying information theory to optical communication. This involves information driven design of optical communication systems and components. More specifically the joint design of probabilistic shaping and FEC will be studied to extend beyond HD FEC and shape the signals for the transmission of optical signals. System performance shall be modelled, analysed and optimized including important resource aspects as energy efficiency and spectral efficiency as part of the framework. Energy efficiency at the system level shall be addressed in unified interdisciplinary approach encompassing both optical and digital techniques and combined design and optimization for next generation solutions in optical communication.

Your research will include:

• Optimization of optical communication systems and components for performance and energy efficiency.

As a researcher at DTU Fotonik you are expected to collaborate with colleagues within the Department, specifically in relation to the DNRF SPOC project. You are also expected to collaborate with industry in relation to the INCOM project. You are expected to develop strong external relations with universities and industry in Denmark and internationally. Furthermore, you are expected to strive for scientific excellence within your field. You are expected to perform excellent supervision of PhD students and undergraduate students, and in general perform teaching activities up to 20% of your time, depending on the financing project. You are expected to be able to attract external funding from national and international sources in support of your research activities.

Dissemination of research activities as part of teaching and to the general public is part of the position.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The successful candidate is required to have a strong background in information theory applied to communications systems, specifically optical communication. You are expected to have a strong academic background within the field. Experience with industrial research is a plus. You are expected to have:

• Research experience with simulation of optical communication
• Research experience within application of information theoretical concepts to optical communication in the non-linear regime.
• Research experience in coded modulation
• Research experience in designing channel coding as probabilistic shaping combined with error-correcting coding for optical communication in the non-linear regime
• Research experience in participation in optical communication experiments, including non-linear regime
• Research experience beyond the PhD degree within the area of the position

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment.
