Researcher in Structural Testing of Composite Structures

DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites candidates for a position as Researcher in the field of Structural Testing of Composite Structures. The Researcher will be associated with the Lightweight Structures group at the Section for Solid Mechanics, one of six sections in the department. The position is available as soon as possible and preferably with a start date by 1 April 2019.

The position as a Researcher is a permanent entry-level position.

The Lightweight Structures group consists of around 10-15 persons and is focused on research, education and innovation within primarily polymer based fiber reinforced composite structures within a broad spectrum of applications ranging from aircrafts, ships, offshore structures, vehicles and energy applications.

Currently the group is involved in research projects focused on large-scale structural testing of composite structures, e.g. wind turbine blades, where the development of advanced multi-axial testing methodologies including hybrid simulation will be the main focus for the Researcher.

The group has over 15 years of experience, developing both advanced mechanical analysis as well as coupon and structural test methods to address the criticality of damages in composite structures in relation to damage tolerance and structural damage assessment. The Researcher will be extending the work on advanced structural test methods and will be participating in on-going and coming research and development activities within this field.

Responsibilities and tasks

The Researcher will be responsible for research in advanced structural test methods for composite structures within a wide range of applications, e.g. wind turbine blades, aircraft structures, marine structures, vehicles etc.

The research activities will include the following areas:

• Development of advanced structural test methods including real-time hybrid simulation methodologies for large-scale composite structures, using optimized numerical analysis methods suitable for hybrid simulation.
• Perform design and dimensioning of structural test rigs and setups on the strong floors/walls, necessary to carry out advanced structural testing of composite structures.
• Carry out advanced finite element modelling and analysis of composite structures and test rigs using commercial finite element codes.
• Develop advanced operational procedures for multi-axial test systems associated with advanced structural testing of composite structures.

The candidate will also participate in supervision and testing of bachelor-, master- and PhD-level students in the group. Teaching abilities in Danish will be preferred, however for international candidates, DTU can provide Danish language courses enabling the candidates to teach in Danish within 2-3 years.

The Researcher will be working independently, but in close cooperation with both other members of the Lightweight Structures group as well as other research groups at DTU Mechanical Engineering and DTU Civil Engineering.

The Researcher is expected to build a national and international network of research partners within the field to facilitate cooperation and development of proposals for future research projects and associated funding.

The Researcher will also have a close daily cooperation with the laboratory staff in DTU Structural Lab - one of the most advanced and largest test facilities of its type in Northern Europe.

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) in advanced structural testing, preferably within hybrid simulation of composite structures.

We also expect the candidate to possess a high degree of flexibility and self-motivation, which are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect the candidate to be interested in collaboration, but also to work independently and take personal responsibility for assigned work tasks. Furthermore, the candidate must demonstrate commitment to an academic carrier in order to qualify for the Researcher position.

It is expected that the candidate possess general knowledge of composite and structural mechanics - both at the material and structural length scale. Furthermore, the candidate must be able to document research activity and/ or experience within the following areas:

• Composite materials and structures, including sandwich structures
• Finite element analysis using commercial FEM codes (preferably ABAQUS and ANSYS)
• Extensive experience with general large-scale structural testing, preferably of composite structures
• Extensive experience with real-time hybrid simulation/testing, preferably single component hybrid simulation/testing of composite structures
• Preferably development and implementation of advanced compensation techniques to improve accuracy and to facility single component hybrid simulation
• Advanced level hands-on experience with multi-axial servo-hydraulic controller systems from MTS and/or Instron is an advantage

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The position as a researcher is a permanent entry-level position. After a maximum of 4 years, a researcher can be promoted to a senior researcher position after assessment.
