The Department of Environmental Engineering invites applicants for a Senior Researcher Scientist position in projects related to innovative bioaugmentation strategies to tackle ammonia inhibition in anaerobic digestion process. The Senior Researcher will work on the development of methods and technologies for alleviating the ammonia toxicity effect on anaerobic digestion using advanced microbiological methods (bioaugmentation). The Senior Researcher will join the Bioenergy group in the Residual Resources Engineering Section with a team of approximately 25 scientific staff members. The Bioenergy group has wide interdisciplinary expertise ranging from fundamental research (microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology) to more applied engineering approaches. Responsibilities and tasks The Senior Researcher is expected to have research experience in anaerobic digestion processes, will be involved in national, as well as, international projects, and is expected to participate in the development of new project proposals and in teaching. The responsibilities of the Senior Researcher will be the scientific overview of the project titled “MicrobStopNH3-Innovative bioaugmentation strategies to tackle ammonia inhibition in anaerobic digestion process”. Furthermore, the Senior Researcher will organize and coordinate the BSc course 12701-Living Systems Engineering and contribute to the organization (co-coordination) and teaching of BSc/MSc advanced course 12136-Bioenergy Technologies. The work will involve the continuous development and maintenance of expertise in the area of biomethanation process optimization and microbial ecology. In particular, the bioaugmentation process has the primary focus as well as offering of projects for students at all levels and contributing to project applications. As an integrated part of the job, the Senior Researcher is expected to contribute to teaching at MSc and PhD level, as well as undertake supervision of PhD, MSc and BSc student thesis Work. The Senior Researcher is expected to: •Contribute to research and innovation projects within the Residual Resources Engineering Section (RRE) in collaboration with colleagues and within the Department strategy (e.g. proposal writing, managing and conducting of research projects, and supervision of students). •Contribute to the management and productivity of the Bioenergy Group, the RRE Section and the Department in collaboration with colleagues, technicians and leaders. •Contribute to strengthen actively the social capital within the Department and the RRE Section. •Take on the responsibility of managing minor ad-hoc assignments to support the management at the Department. Qualifications Candidates must •hold a PhD degree or equivalent on anaerobic digestion process as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc. •document didactic/pedagogic training The candidate is expected to have: •Post-doctoral/Researcher Scientist experience in anaerobic digestion. •Significant and documented knowledge of the microbiology (High-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing and analysis, fluorescents in-situ hybridization etc.) and biochemistry (metabolic pathways) of the anaerobic digestion process. •Documented knowledge of isotope labelled experiments (14C isotopic analyses). •Documented knowledge of lab-scale batch and continuous (UASB and CSTR) anaerobic digesters operation. •A goal-oriented approach and ability to work independently as well as collaborate with other research groups at the Department.
