The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Centre (Centre for Oil and Gas - DTU), Technical University of Denmark (DTU), invites applicants for a senior researcher position on fracture modelling in chalk formations. Centre for Oil and Gas - DTU is established by the Danish Underground Consortium and DTU. As part of a national strategy on oil and gas, the research centre is an ambitious, targeted effort to improve recovery of oil and gas from the Danish North Sea.

Responsibilities and tasks


The position will be an integrated part of the advanced water flooding programme with the focus on improving oil recovery in chalk reservoirs in the Danish part of the North Sea. In this context, the candidate is expected to perform innovative, fundamental and applied research on fracture modelling in chalk formations. The succesfull candidate will lead projects to develop, test and apply geomechanically based fracture models. They will develop algorithm for predictiing fracture nucliation and growth in complex geological environments, implement these whitin the Petrel modelling software package and validate the results against outcrop and subsurface data. They will work closely with the hydrocarbon industry to test and apply the new models in hydrocarbon fields in the Danish North Sea.

The candidate should assist co-supervising of Ph.D./MSc students working with fracture modelling and collaboration with other researchers and students working within the advanced water flooding programme are required. The team will participate in a growing cross-disciplinary research program, involving several researchers at DTU and other Danish universities, research institutes, and industry. The team will have access to unique field and laboratory data sets to test concepts and methods developed at the centre.

Qualifications


Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc.

Our preferred candidate has the following personal and professional qualifications:

• Strong background in both structural geology and mathematical modelling
• Extensive knowledge of fracture geomechanics
• Experience of developing geomechanical models of fault or fracture nucleation, proagation and interaction
• Experience of applying geomechanical models in an industrial setting
• Excellent skills in C sharp programing as well as experince working with Ocean for Petrel
• Good knowledge of geological modelling, outcrop mapping and geomechanical tests
• Minimum ten years of research and/or industry experience and an excellent scientific track record with good publications in the relevant field

Salary and terms of employment
