About this job A senior system engineer working on backend systems will be involved in all aspects of Issuu's infrastructure and operations. Issuu's services are built on Amazon's scalable infrastructure (EC2, S3, etc). You will be working on the server-side design and code for our platforms, systems, and web applications, as well as internal systems to manage our services. The backend team is relatively small considering the volume of data and visitors using our services, therefore simplicity and scalability of both systems and processes are of vital importance. The daily focus is on productivity and delivering results, while ensuring customer satisfaction, performance, and reliability of our platform. The backend infrastructure is developed in a range of programming languages depending on the task at hand. We mainly use Python, OCaml, and Erlang; we're polyglots, so we're not afraid to use e.g. Go if there is a good reason to do so. A candidate should be strong in both imperative, object-oriented programming languages, as well as both statically-typed and dynamic functional programming languages. We seek an individual with a deep CS background and experience that includes development of high-availability online services. Candidates should have a passion for solving complex and interesting problems. Our backend systems solve problems from just about every area of computer science, including search, information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, big data, etc. Responsibilities • Self starter and quick learner, with a demonstrated ability to deliver results in a fast paced environment with global competition • Excellent communications skills in English • Experience designing and building robust high-volume production web applications • Ability to create prototypes quickly • Extensive knowledge of Unix/Linux • Experience with Python.
