STAR Post-doctoral Researcher – Blood brain barrier transport The ADME, Histology & Imaging and Obesity Biology departments within the Diabetes Research Unit are offering an International Post-doctoral fellowship to a highly motivated and ambitious candidate. The Diabetes Research Unit focuses on improved treatments for diabetes and obesity, and is an integrated research unit of Novo Nordisk - a world leader in diabetes care. If you are an ambitious researcher interested in absorption biology across blood brain barrier (and related biological barriers), you could be our new colleague in the Diabetes Research Unit. About the department The ADME department employs biological models and bio-analytical tools (e.g., LCMS) to characterise the absorption and metabolism of proteins/peptides. The Histology & Imaging department utilise pioneering imaging techniques which permit characterisation of the distribution of proteins/peptides in vivo. The Obesity Biology department examines the biology of energy expenditure and appetite regulation pathways by means of a variety of cell and molecular biology methods. The job The project will focus on the development and optimisation of in vitro models of the blood brain barrier (BBB) and blood-cerebrospinal fluid (blood-CSF) barrier, and to subsequently evaluate and compare the passage of various native proteins (e.g., GLP-1) across these cerebral barriers. Research will be directed towards validating and characterising primary culture-based models and subsequently elucidating the mechanisms which underlie the transport of proteins/peptides across the BBB and blood_CSF barrier. It is a collaborative project between the ADME, Histology & Imaging and Obesity Biology departments and the laboratories of Dr Birger Brodin, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark and Dr Vincent Prevot, INSERM, Lille, France. The candidate is employed by Novo Nordisk. The first 1½ years of the project will take place in the laboratories of Dr Birger Brodin and Dr Vincent Prevot. For the last ½ year the candidate will work at the ADME department located at the Novo Nordisk R&D site in Måløv, Denmark. The candidate must therefore expect to live in France for a portion of the period (~9 months). Travel expenses between France and Denmark will be fully reimbursed by Novo Nordisk. Qualifications You hold a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences, neuroscience, biology or related disciplines. Solid knowledge and hands-on experience with in vitro cell culture absorption models is a requirement. Experience with various imaging techniques (e.g. confocal microscopy) and isolation and cultivation of primary cultures is considered an advantage. A background within the field of BBB is also deemed beneficial. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work well within interdisciplinary research team are required. On a personal level, you are flexible, collaborative, and you thrive in a dynamic research environment.
