Three PhD scholarships in High Performance Chemical Analysis of Food: Food Authenticity and Food Monitoring

The research group for Analytical Food Chemistry at the National Food Institute, Technical University of Denmark invites applications for three 3-year PhD scholarships focused on developing high performance chemical analyses to address important issues in food authenticity and chemical food monitoring. One of the PhD students (1) is expected to contribute to our strategic research in food authenticity, adulteration and food fraud, while the two other PhD students (2 and 3) will work together to develop important tools for chemical screenings methods to be used for food monitoring. All three projects will be based on exploiting high performance mass spectrometry. The successful applicants will be based in the research group for Analytical Food Chemistry that focus on developing and applying high performance trace analyses for food monitoring and risk assessment. The core analytical platform in the research group is chromatography combined with high performance mass spectrometry. These three scholarships are a part of government funded research initiatives to strengthen the Danish food monitoring of unwanted chemical in food by developing rapid and efficient analytical methodologies. The students will be enrolled in PhD school at the National Food Institute. Responsibilities and tasks The three PhD students are expected to collaborate, also with other PhD students in the group, to develop and apply analytical methodologies to monitor food and to document authenticity. Common to the projects is that the research will include sampling, extraction and concentration procedures of compounds from complex matrices like food samples and other biological material followed by analysis by chromatography - accurate mass spectrometry. It is expected that all three project will include collaboration with several other DTU departments. Food Authenticity (1) This PhD student will focus on using isotope ratio mass spectrometry, chiral chromatography, fingerprinting by HRMS and multivariable data analysis to develop and applying methodologies: •to distinguish synthetic food components from natural ingredients including flavors. •to characterizing the origin of food and food components in relation to production, place of growth or production, plant species etc. •to propose strategies to document food authenticity and reveal fraud and adulteration. Sampling preparation for screening methodologies (2) This PhD student is expected to focus on the first part of the analytical process to develop a generic, robust and efficient workflow for sampling, sample preparation, extraction and chromatography for food monitoring. The objective is to develop based on sample matrix rather that focus on specific compounds. The compounds of interest are pesticides, mycotoxins, compounds migrating from food contact materials, natural products, and residues of veterinary drugs. Data processing for screening analysis (3) This PhD student is expected to focus on the second part of the analytical process to address the challenge of processing the massive amount of data form screening by accurate mass spectrometry. It is expected that the project address two main challenges: how to estimate concentration/levels if authentic samples is not included in the analytical process and how to discover important but unexpected compounds in the complex full data sets from chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry. Qualifications Candidates should have solid background in analytical chemistry based on a master degree in engineering, chemistry or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
