Two PhD scholarships in Optimal Solutions for Integration of Heat Pumps in District Heating and Cooling Systems

DTU Department of Mechanical Engineering is collaborating with a number of commercial and public companies as well other DTU departments in the Energylab Nordhavn project (http://www.energylabnordhavn.dk/). The project utilizes Copenhagen’s Nordhavn as a full-scale smart city energy lab and demonstrates how electricity and heating, energy-efficient buildings and electric transport can be integrated into an intelligent, flexible and optimized energy system. In the scope of the project Department of Mechanical Engineering focuses on the future development of district heating and cooling and the integration heat pumps and low-temperature heat sources in an integrated and flexible system utilizing fluctuating power sources efficiently. We have two open PhD positions with focus on: 1.Heat pump solutions for integration with district heating in a renewable energy system 2.Optimal integration of district heating, district cooling, heat sources and heat sinks Responsibilities and tasks The two PhD projects will involve the following Work: 1.The future heat demand differs from todays as space heating will be significantly lower, while domestic hot water demands remain constant. The work will determine optimal heat pump configurations and designs integrated with hot water storage operating in future district heating system. Tasks: Analysis of heat pump configurations in future district heating network with lower operating temperatures will be used to investigate heat pump configurations and temperature levels in consideration of available heat sources. Furthermore potential benefits of hot water storages are investigated. 2.The work will develop optimal system designs by integrating heating and cooling as well the available heat sources and sinks in the area. Heat pumps and heat storages will be an integrated part of the solutions. Tasks: Analysis of 1) available heat sources and heat sinks such as solar heat, geothermal heat water heat and sea water cooling and heating, 2) electricity and heat markets, 3) annual variation of these and possibility for integration of heat pumps sets the framework for development of optimal system designs. The projects are related and it is expected that the candidates exploit the benefit of this and have close interaction with the academic and commercial partners in the project. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
