The Section for Astrophysics and Atmospheric Physics at DTU Space offers a PhD position in Instrumentation for Hard X-ray and Gamma-ray Astrophysics.

The proposed PhD project will be part of the research on development of 3D CZT drift strip detectors conducted by the DTU Space detector group.

The instrumentation for high energy telescopes (bigger than 100 keV) requires detectors of high efficiency, high energy resolution and the capability of 3D position sensitivity. A fine spectroscopic performance combined with sub mm position resolution will make it possible to perform 3D reconstructions of the photon interaction in sub-mm, a feature which is essential and can be utilized for future new instrumentation working in the energy range from the 20keV to a few MeV regions.

DTU Space has a strong position in instrument development for astrophysics primarily based on space missions and several decades heritage of participation in astrophysical satellites. Current satellites include INTEGRAL, PLANCK, NuSTAR, ASIM and in the near future we also participate in JWST, EUCLID and ATHENA.

More specifically for the advertised PhD project, the group of Astrophysics is also involved in a project in collaboration with Kromek, UK, funded under the Horizon 2020 / Eurostars for development of a new generation Molecular Breast Imager using the DTU Space developed 3D CZT detector sensor technology.

Responsibilities and tasks
The purpose of our project is to develop a 'space-ready' compact 3D CZT detector module system based on drift strip detector technology which will be suitable for future hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray astrophysical missions.

The goal of the PhD project is to further develop the 3D CZT drift strip detectors as building blocks for future high energy astronomy. By combining requirements from different high energy mission instruments and through the investigation of high timing, spectral and spatial resolution from the 3D CZT detector experimental data, the project aims to develop for the first time new generation high resolution, space ready detector modules to be used for future high energy missions.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.

The successful candidate is expected to mainly perform the following tasks:

• 3D CZT detector algorithm optimization and characterization
• Measurements and data analysis of 3D CdZnTe drift strip X-ray and Gamma-ray detectors
• Artificial Neural Network (ANN) design and HW implementation of the 3D CZT algorithm
• Design and performance simulation of scientific instrumentation for high energy astronomy
• Write half-year progress reports
• Disseminate results at conferences and through scientific articles
• Teaching duties (up to 15% of working time)
• Attend PhD courses (30 ECTS)
• A mandatory research stay during a semester abroad is to be foreseen.

Assessment
The successful candidate has outstanding analytical and problem solving skills to become a committed researcher with a drive for excellence. Experience on measurements and data analysis of X-ray and Gamma-ray detectors will be an advantage.

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Senior scientist Irfan Kuvvetli.
Interviews are foreseen to take place during the first week of March 2019.
