The Section for Manufacturing Engineering at the Department of DTU Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position in the field of Industry 4.0 Digital Technologies for High Added Value Zero Defect Manufacturing to develop cutting-edge digital technologies for precision manufacturing specifically applied to polymer processing and additive manufacturing processes. The PhD project has a key role in supporting the research carried out at Section of Manufacturing Engineering of DTU Mechanical Engineering in the field of digitization in manufacturing.

The Section for Manufacturing Engineering at the Department of Mechanical Engineering performs research based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, solid and fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics in the analysis, modelling and development of manufacturing processes. The research objective of the Section is to promote 'Precision Manufacturing' to meet the performance, durability, reliability, size, and cost requirements of modern products.

Responsibilities and tasks

The increasing focus on digitization, and interconnection of product, machine and manufacturing processes represents one of the main global trends in the industry today. The digital transformation of the conventional manufacturing process chains and the way products are produced and offered is often referred as the 4th Industrial Revolution, or Industry 4.0.

The scientific goal of the PhD project is to develop an Industry 4.0 manufacturing platform for high volume and high precision polymer processing production based both on machine-generated process-related data and dimensional characteristics of the components, on a multi-machine production setting.

The project aims at bridging the research gap between the development and the application of digital production technologies in high volume manufacturing.

In particular focus is given to:

• Industry 4.0 digital technologies for precision polymer processing
• Additive manufacturing and Simulation for digital flexible manufacturing and its integration in the production value chain
• Cost modelling of Industry 4.0 Digital Technologies applied to manufacturing
• Establishment of links between multi-machine process data to moulded quality and robust identification of process/product root-cause.
• Implementation of a process-sensitive and representative fingerprint feature into polymer processing so to make the inspection efficient and effective, at the same time optimizing the quality output and minimizing the required inspection effort.

The research will encompass an integration of expertise in a number of different key fields such as plastic process technology, process simulation, additive manufacturing, process monitoring and statistical process control, quality control, data analytics, cost modelling.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

• M.Sc. in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering or equivalent
• Knowledge and/or experience in the field of polymer processing and precision manufacturing process chain
• Knowledge and/or experience in the field of additive manufacturing
• Knowledge and/or experience of statistical quality control methods (e.g. statistical process control, design of experiment)
• Knowledge and/or experience with cost modelling of manufacturing processes
• Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group
• Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken

Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
