Applications are invited for 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in the field of Synthetic Biochemistry and Metabolic Engineering.

The proposed start date is May 2019.

Responsibilities and tasks The proposed project aims at expanding the biochemical landscape of bacterial cell factories to access new-to-Nature products through the implementation of synthetic metabolism, both in vitro and in bacterial cell factories. The successful applicant shall work independently on the development of high-impact research projects in which a significant workload is expected to advance the research successfully. The candidate will work within a team to develop their independent project, while also contributing to projects of other team members. They will also be responsible for the execution of all aspects of the project including both experimental and computational tasks-and support will be available for all aspects from fellow laboratory members at the Systems Environmental Microbiology group and core facilities at the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability.

The appointed person will be expected to (i) work to tight deadlines and manage multiple projects, (ii) interact with other researchers at the SEM Group and the Center for Biosustainability, and other leading partner institutions, (iii) interact in a professional manner with industrial partners in a highly multidisciplinary environment, (iv) report regularly both in the form of written reports and oral presentations (both internally and in conferences), (v) support the research team through training and supervision of other researchers and students, (vi) write scientific papers to high standard, and (vii) actively engage in drafting project proposals and applications.

Additional responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

• Intensive wet-lab work on Biochemistry, Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology in microorganisms.
• High-throughput analytics, including LC-MS/MS analysis (targeted metabolomics and proteomics), GC-MS/MS analysis and ICP-MS.
• Engineering of novel biocatalysts.

Qualifications

• Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent.
• Overall, preferred applicants will have excellent academic record of accomplishment, solid research experience, and will be highly motivated towards developing novel technologies and approaches for the production of new-to-Nature compounds, with a genuinely curious approach to Science.
• Excellent communication skills, fluent written and oral English.

• have a proven track record within the fields of biochemistry, microbiology, metabolic engineering, computational approaches to cell factory design, and synthetic biology,
• have demonstrated early in their career a capacity for innovation and excellence,
• make the research and excellence tied to this position his/her number one priority,
• have a strong work ethics, and
• be a team player.

Salary and terms of employment

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
