Do you want to take a PhD degree in the area of wind power? Vestas Wind Systems A/S, the global wind power market leader, is looking for a highly qualified candidate for an Industrial PhD project 'New production paradigms for wind turbines' to be made in collaboration with Technical University of Denmark, a world leading university in wind power. The project is funded by Innovationsfonden in DK. Vestas Innovation & Concepts, Vestas Technology & Service Solutions The PhD project will be placed in the Innovation and Concept department within Vestas Technology & Service Solutions, Aarhus. The main focus of the department is to develop breakthrough innovations. The department is focusing on collaborating with internal stakeholders across the Vestas value chain, including manufacturing - and also focusing on collaborating with external partners such as universities and other hi-tech partners. Vestas Technology & Service Solutions has a large R&D staff and has furthermore extensive lab facilities for testing all aspects of modern wind turbine technologies. The PhD will be enrolled in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The PhD will be carried out at the Section for Manufacturing Engineering that covers manufacturing engineering in a broad sense. The research involves theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches. The main activity areas cover a wide range of manufacturing processes, micro manufacturing, metrology at all dimensional scales as well as modelling approaches to all these subjects. The objective of the research activities of the section is to promote ‘Precision Manufacturing’ to meet requirements to modern products in terms of high performance, durability and reliability, as well as size and cost efficiency. Research is based on a multi-disciplinary use of process technology, materials science, thermodynamics as well as solid and fluid mechanics in the analysis and modelling of manufacturing processes. The Section for Manufacturing Engineering currently includes 5 professors, 6 associate professors, 9 researchers and 26 PhD students. Responsibilities: The PhD student has in dialogue with the supervisors to implement the PhD project 'New production paradigms for wind turbines' as described in the accepted funding proposal for this project. It is the objective of this PhD project to define how 3D printing/Additive Manufacturing will potentially impact the design, manufacturing, value and economy of large wind turbine composite components. Ultimately this will result in new design opportunities for added value to the end customer for wind turbines. The PhD shall in addition take the required PhD courses, make conference presentations as well as make a final thesis with a view to achieve the PhD degree. Qualifications: The candidate must have a relevant engineering education on Master level with a weighted average grade for the entire Master and Bachelor education of minimum 8,2 (new Danish grade system)/minimum 9,0 (old Danish grade system) and 10 in the thesis. For candidates graduating from foreign universities it has to be documented that their grades are comparable to these DK grade requirements. What we offer: You will work in two of the recognized world leading organizations on wind power and spend 3 years there taking your PhD degree in wind power. Additional information: The PhD is a 3 year project. The PhD student will have to be working around half of the period in Vestas, Aarhus, and around half of the period in DTU, Lyngby, where the student will be enrolled. There will also be shorter stays abroad. It will be agreed with the student what time periods (months/years) the student shall stay with Vestas and DTU.
