The Division of Cell and Gene Therapy of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine (CTN) is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Lab Manager. We are looking for a mature, well-organized individual who is both independent and pro-active, and who can provide close support to both students and junior researchers in the Center. The successful candidate must be both interested and academically engaged in neuroscience, and share our passion for its potential clinical application.

This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team engaged in translational stem cell research. Our efforts are focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in the genesis or progression of several neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders (Huntington’s disease, schizophrenia, ALS-FTD and the childhood leukodystrophies). In particular, we are interested in defining the differences in the dynamic regulation of genes and signaling pathways in glial precursor cells, as a way to identify novel therapeutic targets and develop alternative strategies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily supervision of students and researchers, and run and organize our lab to have it work optimal. The ideal candidate has experience from running a lab on a daily basis, and has a flair for organizing and structuring a lab and work processes according to protocols. Since projects are constantly developing, you must see the opportunities in a lab where most days have new and sometimes unexpected challenges. You must be pro-active and have an eye for problem-solving.

The lab manager will be working in a highly multidisciplinary setting, with staff using advanced methods such as stem cell preparation and differentiation, flow cytometry and fluorescence activated cell sorting, confocal microscopy, stereological analysis and advanced imaging technologies, and molecular biological approaches at the DNA, RNA and epigenetic levels, with associated bioinformatics. Some familiarity with this broad scope of efforts is required.

Primary responsibilities

• Serve as principal supervisor to laboratory staff when center director is traveling
• Assist students and researchers in setting up and designing their experiments
• Work with lab staff to ensure that equipment and instrument certifications are current
• Train incoming staff on proper equipment usage and protocols
• Maintain laboratory inventory databases for cells, viruses, antibodies and biological reagents
• Work with collaborators to send and receive reagents, and ensure material transfer agreements
• Ensure resource availability
• Ensure that the lab complies with KU and government regulations and develop/update the required protocols (work environment, chemical safety and labeling, GMO, animal research inspectorate, etc.)
• Assist researchers in preparing animal protocols
• Evaluate possible equipment purchases, obtain quotations and negotiate pricing for larger equipment and bulk orders

Qualifications

• PhD in neuroscience
• Documented work experience from high-quality academic or industrial laboratories
• Techniques: Significant expertise in least a few of the principal methodologies used in the Center
• Language: fluent in Danish and English (written and verbal)
• Good scientific writing in English
• Experience with writing protocols
• FELASA certificate for animal use
• Experience with laboratory organization
• Well-organized, independent and pro-active
• Mature and calm under pressure Occasional travel to the US – no more than twice yearly – should be expected

Employment conditions
Employment will be in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). According to the collective agreement, a monthly pension contribution of 17.1% is added. Employment level will be Senior Adviser (in Danish: specialkonsulent)

Working hours are 37 hours per week.

This is a permanent position, after a probationary period.

The successful candidate will report directly to Professor Steven Goldman.

Start date: 1 February 2019 or after agreement.
