About CPR

Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (www.cpr.ku.dk) at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND), University of Copenhagen, performs basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of biomedical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources, from in silico target identification, mass spectrometry based proteomics, structural biology, protein production and characterization to elucidation of various disease mechanisms.

The research project

The Structural Molecular Biology group led by Professor Guillermo Montoya works in the interface between biology, physics and chemistry and uses molecular biology, X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy to dissect the working mechanisms of the macromolecules that constitute the cell’s machinery.

We are seeking an excellent and highly motivated postdoctoral candidate to lead a project combining biochemistry, SPA cryoEM and crystallography to study protein-DNA complexes that allow the insertion of large DNA segments into a genome. The position is funded through an NNF distinguished investigator grant. The ideal candidate for this project will be a structural biologist with experience in protein-DNA biochemistry and cryoEM and/or crystallography expertise. The position is funded for 3 years (2+1) with a possible extension for a 4th year.

Our institute provides the state-of-the art infrastructure and instrumentation including a Titan Krios TEM equipped with the state-of-the-art direct electron detector and 3 auxiliary TEMs for sample characterization. We expect to incorporate another 200 Kv system with a Falcon III camera by the end of the year. In addition, the selected person will benefit from an intellectually stimulating, supportive and collaborative environment, including access to transferable skills workshops run by our center and the University of Copenhagen (project writing courses, career development and leadership workshops), and a range of enabling core facilities in the center including crystallization, protein production, molecular biophysics, high performance computing, bioinformatics, and mass spectrometry.

Profile

• The candidate is required to have a PhD in relevant field.
• Highly motivated and ambitious.
• Prior research experience with research areas involving structural biology is required.
• Experience with cryo-EM; carrying the project through the different stages of specimen preparation, negative stain and cryo-EM screening, data collection, assessment, processing, and interpretation using appropriate software packages is highly appreciated.
• Ability to manage the day-to-day running of a research project, including assisting the work of others, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Ability to prepare scientific reports and journal articles.Fluency in English and excellent communication skills (written and spoken).

The postdoc position is a full-time position for 3 years. Starting date is 15 October 2019.



Terms of salary and employment

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The positions are covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
