The Helin lab is looking for an ambitious candidate to join the lab for a PhD fellowship within the field of chromatin regulation and cancer. The PhD fellowship is financed by the EU via a MC-ITN-ETN action. As such, the PhD fellowship is part of a training programme ChromDesign (http://www.chromdesign.eu) that will have a total 13 PhD students located in 10 European academic and private institutions. The PhD fellow will attend common training sessions and have secondments at other partner universities.

Research Project
To identify potential novel therapeutic targets for the treatment of leukaemia, we have performed CRISPR-Cas9 based screens using libraries targeting chromatin-associated proteins in mouse models for leukaemia and in human cell lines. These screens have led to the identification of several interesting hits, which should be validated in vivo before they will be further characterised.

The objective of the project is to understand the role of the validated hits in normal haematopoiesis and in leukaemia with the goal of translating the findings into potential new treatments for leukaemia patients.

The specific objectives include: i) validating the in vitro hits in transplantation models for mixed-lineage and Npm1-mutated leukaemia, ii) perform structure-function analysis of the prioritized hit(s), including the identification of associated proteins; iii) performing studies to understand the role of the prioritized hits in transcriptional regulation and in regulating genome structures during hematopoietic differentiation and in leukaemia; iv) testing (or developing) specific inhibitors for the prioritized hits in mouse and xenograft models for leukeamia.

Start: January 1st, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter
Duration: 3 years as a PhD student

Qualifications
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with the following qualifications:

• A Master of Science in biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedicine or similar
• Experience with experimental design, practical laboratory work, data analysis and presentation of obtained data
• Relevant work experience
• Ambitious and curious mind-set with a strong interest in molecular disease biology
• Excellent communication skills in English

Formal requirements and eligibility
At the time of commencement, it is required that the candidate has not been awarded a PhD degree and is within the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of her/his research career. Furthermore, the candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment.

Place of employment
The employment and place of work is at BRIC, University of Copenhagen. BRIC is located close to the centre of Copenhagen, in the Copenhagen Biocenter. Terms of salary and employment
The appointment as a PhD fellow is for 3 years. It is conditioned upon the candidate’s successful enrolment in the PhD school at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen. This requires submission and acceptance of an application for the specific project formulated by the candidate during an initial three-month employment as a research assistant.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State and according to the rules and regulations laid down by European Union’s Horizon 2020 Marie Curie Initial Training Networks. The position is covered by the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities (2013).

The further process
