We are seeking a highly talented PhD candidate in the field of theoretical quantum transport in 2D materials. We are an international research team of more than 60 students and staff at the Center for Nanostructured Graphene, CNG. CNG is a well-established centre of excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. It is located at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), one of the leading technical universities in Europe. We are carrying out research in graphene and other 2D materials ranging from growth and device fabrication to simulations and theory.

The PhD project is on quantum mechanical calculations of electron transport in 2D materials and devices based on these. A main target in this project is to investigate the role of the electron-phonon interaction, which is central for the understanding of electronic resistance, Joule heating and device stability. The theoretical studies are related to experiments performed within CNG or in collaboration with international partners.

Responsibilities and tasks

• Electronic structure and transport calculations using Density Functional Theory (DFT) in combination with non-equilibrium Greens functions (NEGF)
• Computational studies of physics relevant to the experiments (electronic properties of graphene and other 2D materials) providing insights into electron-phonon scattering and the impact of disorder, gating, doping and contacts
• You will interact with colleagues on various experiments.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering, physics or physical chemistry similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree.

We prefer candidates with the following qualifications:

• Background in theoretical solid-state physics and/or quantum chemistry.
• Experience with atomistic electron transport calculations.
• Experience with electronic structure calculations (e.g., using Density Functional Theory) e.g., on electronic structure of 2D materials and interfaces.
• Good programming skills (e.g., in python) and the use of computational tools on Linux clusters.
• Good command of English

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
