Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD position starting May 2015, within the field of active magnetic bearings for application in an Offshore Flywheel Energy Storage System at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The PhD-project is funded by the company Maersk Drilling A/S. The project entitled Design and Optimization of Active Magnetic Bearings for Offshore Flywheel Energy Storage System OFESS is a research project carried out in a strong synergetic collaboration with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at DTU and the two companies, Wattsup Power and Maersk Drilling A/S. The project aims at applying active magnetic bearings to Flywheel Energy Storage Systems in order to achieve optimal energy storage and robustness. The project deals with theoretical as well as experimental aspects of OFESS . Responsibilities and tasks The purpose of the PhD-project is to design and test active magnetic bearings for OFESS aided by multiphysic models. The project has a strong multi-physics nature and deals with all practical aspects of design of mechatronic systems and their experimental testing (instrumentation and the use of advanced signal processing techniques). From the theoretical viewpoint the project deals with structural dynamics, multibody dynamics, electromagnetism, machinery dynamics, machine elements design, and control theory. Preferable project start is May 1st, 2015. Qualifications Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering and have relevant qualifications within one or more of the following areas: •Design of machine elements •Solid mechanics with emphasis on machinery dynamics and control •Analytical and numerical methods in multibody dynamic systems •Experimental methods and dynamic testing of rotating structures •Instrumentation, signal analysis and signal processing Moreover the candidate shall have additional skills as: •Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group •Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken •Industrial experience with design of mechanical and mechatronic systems is highly appreciated. Approval and Enrolment The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU.
