PhD Scholarship in Advancing 2D Materials by Metal-Organic Framework Engineering

A 3-year PhD scholarship in metal-organic framework (MOF) chemistry funded by the VILLUM Foundation is available at the Department of Chemistry. The project will be under supervision of Assistant Professor Kasper S. Pedersen and is starting as soon as possible.

The synthetic engineering of the inorganic and organic building blocks constituting all MOF-materials leads to almost endless possibilities for MOF properties tuning (e.g. electronic, magnetic, optical, etc.). The PhD project will focus on the design, synthesis, and characterization of new types of metal-organic network structures, both in the bulk (3D) and at the nanoscale (2D). This includes also the elucidation of structural and physical properties, and electronic structures. A significant fraction of the experiments will be performed at international large-scale facilities (synchrotron, muon, and neutron sources) in Europe and in the US. The project will have significant impact on the understanding of 2D MOF chemistry and physics, and the correlations between chemical and electronic structures, and the ensuing MOF properties. Active dissemination of the obtained results, in scientific articles and through participation in international conferences, is an integral part of the job.

Qualifications

The successful candidate should have a Master's degree in chemistry with a focus on synthetic inorganic or organic chemistry. Experience with crystallography, and synthesis of air-sensitive compounds are considered strong advantages. Most importantly, the candidate should be highly motivated, able to work independently and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants, who seek to be among the brightest in their field and do science at the highest international level, will be considered.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms

The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
